# Combine discount — product, order & shipping savings in one promotion

> In Smarty, Combine discount merges line-item savings, cart-wide reductions, and optional shipping concessions under one Shopify discount and one shared eligibility block. Tabs hold each slice; Purchase type stays global.

## What this type does

**Combine discount** builds **one** automatic or coded promotion while designing **different kinds of savings separately**:

| Component (tab) | Think of it as… | Typical choices |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Product** | [Amount off product](product-discounts) slice — which lines get discounted | **Percentage**, fixed **money**, limitations, advanced **Apply method** behaviour |
| **Order** | [Amount off order](order-discounts) slice — what comes off the eligible order portion | Percentage / fixed amount plus **Exclude rule** subtrees |
| **Shipping** | [Amount off shipping](shipping-discounts) slice — adjusting rates | **Free**, **%**, capped amount, **shipping method / region** rules |

Add only the slices you need. Smarty caps the layout at **three** tabs and **does not duplicate** types (at most one Product, Order, or Shipping slot).

When you publish the promotion as **Discount code**, customers enter **one** code at checkout. That single code applies **all** slices you configured (every enabled Product, Order, and Shipping tab together) whenever the shared eligibility rules pass — you never assign a separate code per tab or per discount type.

The picker label shows **Combine discount**. Reporting labels in Shopify Admin may resemble other automatic Smarty-built discounts depending on storefront context.

### Why merchants use it

* **One code, full stack:** coded campaigns stay simple for shoppers — the same redemption unlocks product, cart, and shipping savings in one go (only the tabs you enabled).
* **Coordinate** multiple savings so they share **one eligibility** posture and **one purchase-type** choice (subscriptions vs one‑time).
* Reduce configuration drift versus maintaining three independent discounts with nearly identical qualifiers.
* **Ship** cohesive campaigns whose product, cart, and fulfilment tiers were authored together.

## Screen structure (usual order)

1. **Discount components** — tab strip labelled **Discount components**. **Add discount** adds another slot when one of Product / Order / Shipping is unused (up to three tabs total).
2. **Purchase type** — global control for recurring vs one‑time purchases (**Subscription**, **One-time purchase**, or **Both**) after configuring components.
3. **Per‑tab editors** — only the slice you chose for that tab: product value + apply rules / order exclusions / shipping selectors, consistent with each standalone type guide.
4. **Eligibility for discount** — a **single** nested rule builder that must pass **before any** slice applies.
5. **Shared extras** elsewhere in Smarty — method (automatic vs code vs bulk batches), combinations, caps, calendars, recurring guardrails. See [Features](../features). With **Discount code**, that method uses **one** code for every enabled Combine tab together.

**Combinations** works like other discount types: product / order / shipping checkboxes plus [**Same-line combine tags**](../features#same-line-combine-tags) on **Shopify Plus** when **Product discounts** is on. Pair those tags with [**Discount tags**](../features#discount-tags) on each discount so two product promotions can share one line. Full detail: [Features — Combinations](../features#combinations).

## Separate discounts vs Combine

| | Three standalone discounts | **Combine discount** |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Eligibility authoring** | Each discount runs **its own** gate | **One** eligibility tree orchestrates enabled slices |
| **Purchase type** | May diverge accidentally | Locked to **one** setting for every slice inside the campaign |
| **Merchant workflow** | Three editors open | Tabs keep context within **one discount** |
